Sharing My Mental Health Journey on World Mental Health Day

I just found out that World Mental Health Day is tomorrow and I really want to share my mental health journey with you.

It was 4 years ago, I was lying on the sofa watching TV after my dinner and I suddenly felt my chest getting tight and I started feeling unwell. My heartbeat went up very high and I started getting scared.

I came to our room and told my husband to take me to the hospital as soon as possible.

On the way to the hospital, we met an accident. I don’t want to get into the details but thankfully no one got hurt a lot.

We reached the hospital and the doctor told me that nothing was wrong it’s just gastritis! She gave me an injection and we came back home. My heart rate was still high.

I couldn’t sleep well that night. The next day, I still was not feeling good so in the evening we went to the hospital and I was admitted to the hospital.

Doctors did the blood test and the ECG report. Everything was normal. The doctor told us to stay there for a night. My husband called my parents. They were very scared.

The next day, the doctor told us that there was nothing wrong with my heart health.

So, what’s wrong?

I had an anxiety attack.

It took me 3–4 months to get over it. I did meditation, and that really helped me. I would love to write in detail about this in the future but in those months, I really learned a lot about myself.

So, as World Mental Health Day is tomorrow, I want to share ways to take care of your mental health.

Identify your triggers and stressors

The first step to taking care of your mental health is to identify the things that trigger your stress and anxiety. Once you know what your triggers are, you can start to understand it better.

For example, if you find that you are always stressed out when you have a lot on your plate, you can try to break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable steps.

I started getting anxious when I thought my heart rate was getting higher and I was going to die. At that time, I used to put my hand on my heart and used to tell myself that it was just my thought, and nothing was going to happen to me.

Understanding my thoughts helped me a lot.

Make time for self-care

Self-care is very important for mental health. You can read your favorite books, listen to happy and soulful music, and go for a walk. If you have pets, play with them, and spend time with your loved ones.

Open up about your thoughts

Share whatever is going on in your mind with someone close to you. Don’t hesitate. Sharing your feelings and thoughts will help you a lot.

Seek professional help if needed

For me, I understood myself better and knew that I didn’t need professional help. But if you think you need help, please tell your family or friends about it and visit a therapist.

Be patient and kind to yourself

Taking care of your mental health takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your successes along the way. Remember, you are not alone. Millions of people struggle with their mental health every day. There is help available, and you can recover.

Here are some additional tips for taking care of your mental health:

  • Get enough sleep.
  • Eat a healthy diet.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs.
  • Practice mindfulness and meditation.
  • Set realistic goals.
  • Learn to say no.
  • Take breaks when you need them.

World Mental Health Day is a reminder that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. By taking care of our mental health, we can improve our overall well-being and live happier, healthier lives.
